  • Apply silicone spray to your window opening mechanisms every season.
  • Remove and store your screens during the winter.
  • Carefully clean the base of your windows. Important: Never use an abrasive cleaner to clean PVC windows. Stains can be removed with white Vim, but make sure to properly rinse all surfaces afterwards.
  • Check the condition of your sealed window joints periodically and reseal if needed.
  • Wood windows must be protected using paint, stain or varnish, soon after installation. Unprotected wood may swell and change colour.

Important: There may be condensation at the base of your new windows because they are much more weather-tight than the ones you had before. To prevent condensation, follow the tips on humidity problems.

Humidity ProblemS

If you notice that some of your windows have fog between the panes, this is not a humidity problem but rather a sealed unit problem. In this case, the best course of action is to replace the unit. Some companies offer to repair defective units, but the problem often reappears a few months later.

If the condensation is on the inside panes, then the problem is excess humidity in the house.

You will need to reduce the humidity inside the home. Here are a few tips:

  • Turn on the bathroom fan when taking a shower or bath.
  • Vent the warm air from the clothes dryer outside.
  • Only use a humidifier when needed.
  • Don't dry firewood inside the house.
  • Let air circulate freely around the windows by opening the curtains and blinds.
  • Don't hang your laundry to dry inside.
  • Turn on the range hood fan when cooking.

If condensation persists even after taking these precautions:

  • Create air movement when there is excess humidity
  • Use a house fan to vent the air
  • Use a ventilation system with a heat exchanger

If there’s still condensation:

  • Create air draft when the humidity is excessive, i.e., a house fan
  • Ventilate with the help of appropriate equipment.
  • Buy a ventilation system equipped with a heat exchanger.

Why do new houses usually have a high level of relative humidity?

New wood, plaster, fresh paint and other materials contain moisture, and the air in the house absorbs this humidity until the materials have dried.
